Tom Canning

Hi, I’m Tom and I am the IT Project Management and Business Operations Intern. I was born in Guildford, but I am a business management student studying at Manchester Metropolitan University. I work within the IT Project Management team; we help to manage IT Projects and try to make the process as smooth as possible. The placement so far has been really good, I have already learnt so much about the business whilst counting to grow as a professional. Every day I am learning new things and becoming more confident in the workplace.

What attracted you to TIP Group?

TIP is a big company that values its workers, I wanted to be able to gain experience through working in a company that operates on a big scale and cares about its employees. Through my research of the business, I found that TIP was said to have a good culture, values and be an enjoyable place to work. TIP values are within the name, they are: Team spirit is at the heart of our business, integrity and reliability underpin the way we operate and Passionate about our customers and people. All these values showed me that the business cares a lot about its employees, and I wanted to be a part of that.

Describe your experience at TIP in three words:

Progressive, challenging and welcoming.

What does a typical day for you involve?

A typical day for The IT Project Management and Business Operations Intern can vary but I am responsible for carrying out operations-related tasks and helping manage projects. This includes collaboration with the PMO team by providing project support, assisting the integrations PM regarding acquisitions, running, and organising meetings, processing IT purchase orders and invoicing, and building and maintaining relationships globally with internal and external partners. The role has regular tasks, but other temporary projects so never becomes tedious.

What have you learned/developed since the start of your internship?

I have learnt so much about the way the IT department is run and how they get things done. I have improved on my problem-solving skills, grown my network, learnt to be dependable, etc. It is important that when someone gives me a task I aim to fulfill it to the best of my ability. I aim to be someone who people can rely on, so I make sure my organisational skills are on point. TIP gives its interns lots of responsibility and strives for high standards which is something that I am learning to implement into my day-to-day life at TIP.

What is your favourite thing about working for TIP?

The people are what make my TIP experience so enjoyable, along with a wide variety of different tasks. The workplace is a very enjoyable community to be a part of and everyone is so supportive. The job gives me that element of pushing myself to improve and build my personal development within a business. Due to my role being project management based, you never know what project or task might be around the corner which I really enjoy. I love that I can achieve a finished project and then move on to a different project.
