Meet the Mechanic - Marc

How did you begin working in the commercial vehicle industry?

My grandfather was in the industry and knew a lot of people, he helped me to get an apprenticeship at a haulage company when I left school and I’ve not looked back since!

What does a typical day at work involve for you?

A typical day at work for me involves servicing and repairing TIP trailers, MOT preparations, PDI checks etc. When new trailers come in, I need to look over them to make sure everything is working as it should be, keeping them safe and road legal.

What do you like about working for TIP?

I've not been here for long but I like the conditions at Nelson and the staff here are really nice to work with. I like the way we do things here, if anything is broken we don't mess about, we fix it properly and do a good job. I already see that we want to get it right first time here so that trailers go out on the road to the customers and are not coming back in between services because of something not done properly.

What are the top 3 most valuable skills you’ve learnt whilst working at TIP?

Curtain repairs is one because I've never done them before. I’m also doing a lot more body work compared to what I'm used to, as by trade I’m more mechanical. I've been doing more welding since I've been here too, which ties in nicely with body work.

What’s your biggest work achievement?

I don't know if this is classed as an achievement but where I worked previously, I was there for 16 years, which is a long time!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I do quite a bit of swimming and mountain biking and I go to lots of different places to do so. Near to where I live, there are lots of cloughs, so I do a bit of cross country on my bike. I like motor sport, I watch it a lot, including the Grand Prix. I also listen to music quite a lot and will listen to everything there is; I like old stuff and new stuff, from music made in the 60s to house music made today.

Can you tell us an interesting fact about yourself?

I've got a 16 year old Springer spaniel and he's called Jack, he's quite old so he likes to sleep all day!
