Meet the Mechanic - Jimmy

How did you begin working in the commercial vehicle industry?

I started as an apprentice in the industry, and I’ve been in it ever since, which makes it about 30 years!

I’m an MSU (Mobile Service Unit) at TIP and have been since 2010, before that I was a mechanic based in the TIP workshops.

What does a typical day at work involve for you?

I work on a customer site so I do a lot of servicing for a big customer which can include things like bodywork, looking at their brakes, lights and doing their MOTs for trailers. I’ll also go to breakdowns if needed.

What do you like about working for TIP?

The best part is working with the customers who are all nice and I like meeting new people. Another thing is that no day is the same for me, especially because my role is mobile, so there’s a lot of variety in my day. You also learn a lot by doing different things.

What are the top 3 most valuable skills you’ve learnt whilst working at TIP?

Welding, bodywork and working with customers.

What is your biggest work achievement?

This is a hard question; I’ve done a lot of things since I started in this industry but one that sticks out is I had a customer who was rebranding and required all old livery and curtains removing and renewed. It was a big job to do on my own, but I managed to turn it around quickly. I work on my own a lot, but I can always turn to someone for help when there’s a job that needs two heads.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m into football; I’m a big Rangers fan.

Can you tell us an interesting fact about yourself?

I’ve got a little fawn and white Shih Tzu called Missy and she’s 13!
