TIP Apprenticeships - Paisley

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) 2022, we spoke to Paisley, Apprentice Workshop Mechanic at Williams Tanker Services.

Why did you decide to go down the apprenticeship route?

I chose to do an apprenticeship as you get to learn on the job and at college, but also earn money at the same time.

How has your apprenticeship helped you?

I feel like I have matured since I have been here, working with a variety of different ages and people, including another apprentice on the same course as myself.

What is the difference between learning at college and learning on the job?

Whilst learning on the job, you are ‘thrown’ into it and you can learn a lot from other people who are in the workshops with you, which you would not get so much in college. I think learning on the job gives you more independence too.

What skills have you learnt whilst on your apprenticeship?

I have learnt how to weld, fabricate and do fitting, which is different to other companies who offer similar services. We learn a wide range of skills at Williams Tanker Services.

What have been some of the highlights of your apprenticeship?

Completing my first year and learning what working life is like. It is definitely different from school!

What would you say to others who are thinking of applying to an apprenticeship?

I would definitely say go for it, because depending on what you have got on, it is good to get a trade behind you early on, I think it opens up a lot of other opportunities for you.

What are your plans for the future?

To finish my level two apprenticeship this year then move onto my level three and continue on at Williams Tanker Services.
