TIP Apprenticeships - Kayle

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) 2022, we spoke to Kayle, Workshop Apprentice at TIP Nelson.

Why did you decide to go down the apprenticeship route and why did you choose the workshop apprenticeship in particular?

I decided to go down the apprenticeship route because I can work, learn and earn money at the same time. I get to experience the outside world and can start making something of myself early on.

I chose to do the workshop apprenticeship course as my stepdad did a similar job and I enjoyed watching him work whilst I was growing up. I am a very hands-on kind of person so it was a good match for me!

How has your apprenticeship helped you with your work at TIP Trailer Services?

It helped me grow into something I thought I would never be. Everyone has been really friendly and will help with any sort of situation. I am comfortable here at TIP, both in a working sense and personal sense. We are like a big family and I can talk to anyone if I have any problems.

What is the difference between learning at college and learning on the job?

The main difference for me is that learning on the job earns money and gives me life experience. You can learn more about the working world by being onsite compared to just the theory you learn in a classroom.

What skills have you learnt whilst on your apprenticeship?

Alongside the technical skills, I have developed a lot of personal skills, especially my conversational abilities. I can speak to customers and managers in a professional and confident way.

What have been some of the highlights of your apprenticeship?

Aside from the fact I can actually do the job, it has to be completing the apprenticeship and getting the qualification. I also passed my IRTEC and I can now drive a scissor lift!

What would you say to others who are thinking of applying to an apprenticeship?

Go for it! Why not? It is one of the best things you will be able to do in your life.

What are your plans for the future?

I hope to be at TIP forever and work towards a managerial role in the workshops.
