TIP Apprentices - Abi

We spoke to Abi, Workshop Apprentice at TIP Tanker Services, asking why she chose to do an apprenticeship and how it has developed her skills in the workplace.

Why did you decide to go down the apprenticeship route?

I decided to go down the apprenticeship route as I personally felt there was more opportunity. With an apprenticeship, you get to work and learn at the same time. You’re always busy and as a hands-on type of person, its perfect for me!

How has your apprenticeship helped you?

My apprenticeship has really boosted my confidence. I’m always around other people and interacting with them. I’ve never been very comfortable in a classroom setting but my apprenticeship and working in the workshops has allowed me to develop my confidence and I can now bring this into the classroom with me too!

What was the difference between learning at college and learning on the job?

Learning on the job and being hands-on personally helps me to learn skills easier. I think that learning at college can be boring and you tend to ‘zone-out’ when you’re just staring at a PowerPoint. Learning on the job is more fun, engaging and enjoyable and the things you are learning really stick in your head.

What skills did you learn whilst on your apprenticeship?

Firstly, I’ve developed a range of technical skills relating to job procedures and how to do things correctly. I’ve also really developed personally – I like to set myself little goals so that when I achieve them, my confidence builds.

What are the highlights of your apprenticeship so far?

Meeting other people doing similar apprenticeships has been a big highlight for me. It’s also been nice to gain business insight!

What would you say to others who are thinking of applying for an apprenticeship?

Go for it! I love it. It’s brilliant and I’d definitely say to anyone considering doing an apprenticeship, just do it. It’s great learning. Its also nice to earn money at the same time but overall it’s just really enjoyable!

What are your plans for the future?

My main focus right now is getting the qualifications I need. Once I have those, I’m looking forward to seeing where I can go from there!
