Battery & solar e-reefer solutions

Battery and solar-powered e reefers have their refrigeration system powered by an on-board battery pack that is charged by the electricity grid and by solar panels that are seamlessly integrated into the roof of a refrigerated trailer. The panels act as a range extender by generating power during operation to reduce reliance on grid charging. Solar power is said to generate up to 80% of the power required for e-reefer operation.

With this type of system, the trailer’s refrigeration unit uses an electric motor that draws its energy from the on-board battery pack and from the solar panels. The battery pack size can be matched to the typical length of the temperature -controlled run time required so that no excess weight is carried and unnecessary costs incurred.

A typical single, full charge can take around 3 hours. Frozen temperatures may be maintained for up to 24 hours and chilled temperatures for up to 2 months.

Such systems do not rely on a diesel engine to provide power and so are not only zero emission, but quieter, making them suited to nighttime and urban deliveries. Furthermore, the elimination of diesel in powering the system is said to considerably reduce operating costs.

They can support multi-temperature operations.

The system offers real-time monitoring of its performance, predictive diagnostics to prevent breakdowns before they happen and ‘over-the-air’ updates to enhance efficiency without physical access to the unit.
