16 graduate from the TIP Mechanic Academy as programme continues to build its talent pipeline
PRESS RELEASE: 30th April 2026
All 16 students from the latest cohort of the TIP Mechanic Academy have now successfully graduated, as the programme continues to build a strong pipeline of skilled trailer technicians for TIP’s UK workshop network.
Including this year, the programme has now trained 40 specialist trailer mechanics since launching in autumn 2023; a 100% graduation rate. Each of this year’s graduates will now return to their respective TIP branches across the UK, where they will support the delivery of high-quality trailer maintenance and repair services.
The TIP Mechanic Academy was created to fast-track the development of trailer-specific technical skills, offering a focused alternative to broader heavy vehicle training routes. Delivered over nine months, the programme equips students with the expertise required to work on key trailer components, including axles, braking systems, suspension, electrics and superstructures.
Developed in partnership with leading training provider Innovam, the Academy combines classroom learning, e-learning and workshop experience, with students assessed through both practical and written examinations. Graduates also achieve recognised industry accreditations, including IBKI certification and CPD accreditation from the Society of Operations Engineers, alongside additional endorsements from JOST and BPW.
All students are employed and paid throughout the course, receiving full employment benefits and a professional toolbox, helping to remove barriers to entry and open up careers to individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.
This breadth of experience was highlighted once again this year, with students joining from sectors including engineering, logistics and warehousing, as well as from other departments within TIP and those at an earlier stage in their careers.
Each student is supported by a dedicated mentor, helping bridge the gap between structured training and real-world workshop environments. This support continues beyond graduation, ensuring ongoing development as graduates build confidence in their roles.
Following graduation, students begin a clearly defined progression pathway, including working towards the Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTEC) qualification, typically achieved within a few months, before progressing into more advanced or specialised roles.
Graduates from earlier cohorts have already progressed into Mobile Service Unit roles, while others have developed specialist expertise in areas such as tanker operations and advanced mechanical disciplines.
Spencer Howe, TIP Mechanic Academy graduate, said: “Before joining TIP, I worked in highways and then moved into HGV recovery, but I always knew I wanted to become a mechanic. When I heard about the Academy, it felt like the perfect opportunity. Coming to TIP has been the best move I’ve made. The support from the Academy team has been incredible – whenever you were stuck, they were always there to help. They’ve created a really tight-knit group where you feel valued, and that makes a big difference. I’m now working with tankers and building my skills in welding and fabrication, with IRTEC as my next step. The hands-on experience and learning from people who really know their trade has been invaluable.”
James Robinson, TIP Mechanic Academy graduate, said: “I’ve been with TIP for over 10 years, mainly in more operations-based roles, so this was a bit of a change for me. But I absolutely loved it. The mentors were brilliant and the support throughout was spot on. At 46, you don’t always expect to get an opportunity like this to re-train, so it’s been a great experience. Now I understand both sides of the business, which puts me in a really strong position moving forward. Next step for me is completing my IRTEC qualification, which I’ve already made a great start on.”
Moreblessing Sithole, TIP Mechanic Academy graduate, said: “I previously worked in the refurb centre preparing trailers for paint, so when the opportunity came up to join the Academy, I applied straight away. The way the programme is structured over the nine months is really effective – I learned far more than I ever expected. The trainers were fantastic and they supported me throughout and played a huge part in my development.”
